Trail:

Known for it’s early opening date. Spring Cleaning is a black diamond run that benefits from a southern exposure and lower elevation, meaning that this trail is typically ready to ride mid to late April. Zealous locals, eager to ride some single track, often shovel this trail out as early as March, and several years ago during a low snow year, local riders even rode this trail in January.

Starting at the cluster of KCTS trails around the old Mining School beyond Happy Valley. This trail is known for it steep rock, technical lines, and optional rock faces. This trail has often used by locals to determine if the “new guy” is gonna cut the mustard.

“Can he handle Spring Cleaning right off the bat?”

Yes?!

“Well, welcome to Rossland!”

From the Spring Cleaning start point the trail quickly crosses the Cemetery Trail switchback and continues on straight through into the first of several rock faces. The descent then varies between rocky technical sections, steeps, and more rock. Approximately 550m into Spring Cleaning there are 3 forks in the trail. The upper two forks are KCTS maintained while the third lower line is not an official trail society trail. The upper fork is a short slightly uphill climbing traverse into a steep sandy technical descent. The middle fork is a newer flowy addition to the trail that rejoins the upper fork near the bottom of the steep descent. Only a hundred metres more and the rider reaches Hwy#3B.

{Caution: Do not inadvertently ride out onto the pavement – very busy highway with fast traffic and poor visibility at this crossing point!}.

Cross the highway begin pedaling up and look for the Spring Cleaning sign post on the left (up highway approximately 60m). This lower section of the trail was updated in 2006, taking what sadly was becoming a tired trail and revitalizing it for old and new schoolers alike to enjoy. The lower section has a natural rock face, 2-3 foot wooden hucks, and plenty of flow to add to your adrenaline on your way down to the Wagon Road. From here the rider either turns right and begins the almost 2km climb up the Wagon Road to Rossland, or turns left and descends 1.7km on the Wagon Road & Railgrade to Warfield where you can catch the bus or make use of a shuttle vehicle.

Whiskey Trail trailhead is signposted on the left side of the road. It is approximately 50 m past the turnoff to Birch Main Road where the Malde Creek Road levels off approaching the nearby Malde Pass.

Trail:

A technical single-track climb with several very steep sections for approximately 500m, then undulating over multiple rock obstacles on the “Whiskey on the Rocks” section. Watch for the expert only rock spine known as the “Kidney Stone” which has an easier go-around to the left. The trail crosses a deactivated spur road and Birch Main Road, then consists of flowing descending and undulating single-track through a logged area with multiple wooden jumps, elevated bridges, and rock slabs. The trail crosses Tiger Main logging road, then descends more steeply, with a large constructed drop (The Carpet Jump) before finishing on the Railgrade Trail. Turn left to take it back up to Rossland. Can be shuttled. Leave a vehicle at the pullout on the Railgrade Trail off Gelesz Road, approximately 300 m past the Gelesz Road / Drakes Road junction.
